Cromoglicic Acid Eye Drops

Cromoglicic acid eye drops have been approved in many countries since 1977 (Opticrom, generic).

Structure and properties

The eye drops contain sodium cromoglicate (C23H14Na2O11, Mr = 512.3 g/mol), a white, crystalline, hygroscopic powder that is soluble in water. It is the disodium salt of cromoglicic acid.

Effects

Sodium cromoglicate (ATC S01GX01) is mast cell stabilizing. It inhibits the release of various inflammatory mediators from mast cells that play an important role in the allergic response. These include histamine, kinins, ECF, NCF, prostaglandins and leukotrienes. The effects occur with a time delay of two to four weeks.

Indications

For symptom relief and treatment of various forms of conjunctivitis, such as seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis, chronic allergic conjunctivitis, and vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. 1-2 drops are placed in both eyes four times daily. Treatment must be given regularly and preventively. See also under Administering eye drops.

Contraindications

The eye drops are contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

No interactions with other drugs are known to date.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include local irritation of the eye. In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions have been reported.
