Cystitis due to cold / cold feet

A cystitis, also known as a urinary tract infection, is an infection caused by bacteria which then enters the bladder via the urethra and causes the symptoms.

What influence does cold/cold feet have on the development of cystitis?

Although bacteria are the actual trigger for the infection, cold or cold feet can promote the development of cystitis. The reason for this is that the body works differently in cold weather than under normal conditions. So if it is particularly cold, or if we stand on a cold surface, the blood vessels (especially in the hands and feet) constrict and the metabolism in the body is regulated differently. This then manifests itself in a weakened immune system. This effect makes it “easier” for the bacteria to cause cystitis, as the body can no longer fight off the infection so effectively and the sensitive mucous membrane is not supplied with blood as well due to the cold.

But don’t bacteria feel particularly comfortable in the warmth and multiply?

It is true that bacteria multiply especially in warm temperatures. However, cold is involved in the development of a urinary tract infection. If an increased number of bacteria are already near the ureter, the poorer blood circulation that occurs in cold temperatures can make it easier for the infection to develop, as the bacteria are more likely to move towards the bladder due to the weakened immune system.

What other causes are there?

Cold or cold feet are not a classic cause of the infection, but rather promote the development of already existing germ colonization. There are a number of other risk factors for the development of cystitis. For example:

  • Malformations in the urinary tract
  • Enlargement of the prostate gland
  • Urinary stones
  • Lack of or incorrect intimate hygiene
  • Sexual contacts
  • Gynecological diseases or pregnancy

How can I strengthen my immune system?

If one gets a cystitis due to cold, it is a sign that the body’s immune system is weakened. To effectively prevent a bladder infection it is important to strengthen the immune system. You can do this especially by:

  • Healthy eating
  • Sufficient fluid intake
  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy sleeping habits

Therapy options for cystitis

There are a number of natural home remedies that can help relieve the symptoms of cystitis. – A heat pad or a hot water bottle often helps. – Hot sitz baths can also help those affected.

  • Chamomile also relieves pain. The camomile flower is known for its healing effects and can also help in the case of a bladder infection. Sitting baths in chamomile or the consumption of hot chamomile tea can be recommended.
  • Cranberry in the form of tablets, capsules or juice is also known as a traditional remedy for urinary tract infections. Often only an antibiotic will help in advanced cystitis. So if the symptoms are very painful and there is no improvement with natural remedies, a doctor should be consulted who can prescribe the appropriate antibiotic. Especially during pregnancy you should consult a doctor at the first signs of a urinary tract infection.
