Day Care and Night Care

Partial inpatient care

Day care and night care are forms of partially inpatient care (day care). Here, people in need of care spend the day or the night in a corresponding facility. The rest of the time (the night in the case of day care and the day in the case of night care) they are cared for at home.

Day care is thus a mixture of inpatient care in a home and outpatient care at home. It can save or delay the move to a home for many people and is a valuable relief and support for relatives.

Day care

Seniors receiving home care can spend several hours during the day at a day care facility (day center), once or several times a week. Most facilities offer day care on weekdays, some also on weekends. A transport service picks up those in need of care at home in the morning and brings them back later.

Night Care

Night care facilities provide care and nursing from early evening until you get up the next morning. People who are very restless at night, need medical care or are alone in their homes at night are in good hands here. As with day care, people are picked up and brought home by a transport service. Night care staff also perform many basic care activities, such as personal hygiene and dressing.

Finding the right offer

The range of facilities for day care and night care is not as comprehensive as the range of places in homes. Information about day care and night care facilities in your area can be obtained, for example, from welfare associations, care services and care insurance companies.

Get detailed information and advice before you decide on a facility. In a day care center, for example, the daily routine should be clearly structured but not too rigid. It should also offer those in need of care a program that meets their needs. Find out what leisure activities (handicrafts, singing, painting, excursions, etc.) are offered in addition to care. In many cases, physiotherapy, mobility exercises and memory training are also on the schedule.

Day care and night care: The costs

The costs of meals and leisure activities in the day care or night care facility are not covered by the long-term care insurance contribution. The insured persons must bear these themselves.

Incidentally, entitlement to day care and night care can be combined with care allowance and care benefits in kind.

Care degree 1: No assumption of costs

For people with care degree 1, the care insurance does not pay for day care and night care. However, these care recipients can use the relief amount (125 euros per month) to cover the costs of day care and night care.
