Dental care – what happens at the dentist

What happens during a dental checkup

Many people are afraid of visiting the dentist. However, the check-up is harmless. It is important in order to be able to act in time against caries, gingivitis or even inflammation of the periodontium. Such problems can be detected and treated at an early stage by regular check-ups. This is then usually less time-consuming, expensive and stressful than if the problems have already progressed. The costs for the check-up at the dentist are covered by the public health insurance.

During the dental check-up, the doctor therefore examines the teeth, gums, oral cavity and jaw for pathological changes. The examination includes:

  • Inspection of the oral cavity
  • X-ray diagnostics
  • Instructions for effective oral hygiene

If necessary, the dentist will perform the following treatments as part of the check-up:

  • Removal of hard plaque (tartar)
  • Treatment of caries
  • @ Dental fillings

Even children should be accustomed to regular visits to the dentist at an early age. From the age of six, they should have their mouth and teeth examined twice a year.

Adults should have their teeth checked at least once a year – even if there are no acute complaints. However, the statutory health insurance companies still cover the costs of the check-up twice a year, even in adulthood.

Dentist’s bonus booklet

From the age of twelve, check-ups are recorded in the bonus booklet – and this can save money later on. Anyone who attends all dental checkups and has their bonus booklet stamped will receive more subsidies from their health insurance company if a dental prosthesis is due at a later date.

Five years must be documented in the booklet without any gaps, then the subsidy from the insurance companies increases by 20 percent. If you can provide evidence of check-ups over a period of ten years in the bonus booklet, the subsidy increases to 30 percent.
