Diagnosis of pain in thigh and hip

The diagnosis of pain in the thigh and hip is largely based on the medical history, i.e. the doctor-patient consultation. During this process, an attempt is made to identify a possible trigger. The type of pain, its occurrence, and factors of improvement or deterioration are groundbreaking for this.

Depending on the suspicion of a possible cause, further examinations can be helpful. These may include, for example, imaging procedures, such as an X-ray or CT, as well as blood tests. In the case of a hernia, an ultrasound can also be helpful.

Associated symptoms

Pain in the thigh and hip can cause various other symptoms. The pain itself can radiate from one area to the other or be of varying intensity. Likewise, the pain can occur mainly under stress or at rest.

Depending on the cause, swelling, for example in the groin area, as well as reddening of the skin can also occur. Often the pain can also be accompanied by limited mobility. If the surrounding nerves are affected, numbness or tingling may also occur.

Tingling and numbness as accompanying symptoms

If pain in the thigh and hip also leads to a pinching of a nerve, this can lead to an altered perception in the surrounding areas. This includes tingling or a numbness. This occurs, for example, with the so-called meralgia paraesthetica, in which a nerve that supplies the skin on the outside of the thigh is pinched.

This causes a tingling or numbness in this area, depending on the extent of the pinching. This is often accompanied by severe pain, since nerves react very sensitively to pressure. Another accompanying symptom of pain in the thigh and hip can be swelling of the lymph nodes in the groin area.

In principle, this is a sign of an activated immune system and can occur in various diseases. For example, swelling of the lymph nodes can occur during the healing process after an injury. An abscess in the groin also often causes additional swelling of the lymph nodes. The cause should always be clarified.
