Diagnosis | Upper abdominal pain left

Diagnosis

In order to find out the underlying cause responsible for the complaints, a doctor should be consulted. This is especially true if the pain has been present for a long time or is very severe. This doctor can use diagnostic methods to determine the disease causing the pain and initiate appropriate therapy. In addition to a detailed anamnesis and a physical examination, during which both the bowel sounds are listened to and the abdomen is palpated, imaging methods are frequently used. With both an ultrasound machine and an MRI examination of the abdomen, the internal structures can be well assessed and any existing problems can be quickly identified.

Upper abdominal pain left in the child

If pain occurs on the left costal arch in children, many different causes can be responsible. Often, pain in children is significantly more unspecific than in adults. Depending on the age of the child, different causes occur with varying degrees of probability.

Above all, it is important to examine the child’s body for other symptoms. This often reveals clues that allow a conclusion to be drawn about the cause of the pain. Left-sided upper abdominal pain in children is usually caused by an infectious intestinal disease or digestive disorders.

The so-called hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is another typical infantile disease which can cause pain in the left upper abdomen. Between the age of 2 months and three years, the invagination of intestinal loops can lead to severe pain in the upper abdomen. Since certain metabolic and kidney diseases are diagnosed for the first time in childhood, diseases of the urinary tract should also be considered as a cause of the pain that occurs. Severe and prolonged pain in the left upper abdomen should always be examined by a pediatrician in order to exclude serious clinical pictures or, if necessary, to initiate a suitable therapy.
