Do ovarian cysts also cause pain in the ovary?
Ovarian cysts usually cause no pain, especially if they are only a few centimeters in size. However, if they get bigger, they can cause pain due to pressure on surrounding organs. Ovarian cysts cause the size of the ovary to increase, and thus pose a greater risk of the ovary rotating around itself, thereby twisting the ligaments holding it in place.
The problem is that the blood vessels that supply the ovary run through the ligaments. They are pinched off by the twisting of the ligaments and the ovary is cut off from the blood supply and dies. This causes severe, usually sudden pain and should be urgently examined by a gynecologist.
The cysts in the ovaries can develop in different ways. In most cases, cysts in the ovaries are formed when the follicles in which the eggs mature become too large. In rare cases, however, the lining of the uterus can also grow inside the ovary.
Since this tissue tends to cause bleeding, small bleedings can occur within the cyst. Consequently, the blood coagulates and turns brown. For this reason, these cysts are called chocolate cysts. There are also corpus luteum cysts, which develop from the part of the follicle that remains after ovulation. They are quite normal in the second half of the cycle and during pregnancy and usually do not cause pain.
Polycystic ovary – does the disease cause pain?
PCO is the abbreviation for polycystic ovary. It is a disease in which the normal hormone regulation of the body is disturbed. This can lead to some external and internal changes.
Many follicles mature in the ovary, but the hormonal signal for ovulation is missing. Therefore, the follicles remain behind and can be seen in the ultrasound as many small cysts. In addition, without ovulation, the second part of the cycle is not initiated and therefore menstruation may not occur. Since the ovary is enlarged due to the many follicles, there is also a slightly increased risk of twisting.As a rule, PCO does not cause pain in the area of the ovaries.
