Does a baby need Omega 3 fatty acids?
A sufficient supply of omega-3 fatty acids is also very important for babies. Among other things, these are needed for normal development of the brain and eyes and are therefore a prerequisite for normal visual function and mental development. Omega-3 fatty acids are transmitted through breast milk, so there is no need for a dietary supplement for babies.
The mother should take care to consume a sufficient amount of omega-3 fatty acids to cover the increased requirements during the breastfeeding period. If this cannot be achieved through the normal diet, it may be appropriate to take a dietary supplement. For babies who are not breastfed, omega-3 fatty acids are usually added in sufficient quantities to the baby’s diet. The components contained are listed on the product.
Daily dosage
The dosage of omega-3 fatty acids should be based on the daily requirement on the one hand, and on the other hand on the amount already supplied by the normal diet. The daily requirement can be based, for example, on the recommendations of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the German Society for Nutrition (DGE). Both organizations specify a guideline value of 250 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids as the daily requirement. However, this can vary from individual to individual and is increased, for example, in pregnant women or competitive athletes. Whether and in which dosage the intake of Omega-3 fatty acids is appropriate can be discussed with the family doctor.
Price
Omega-3 fatty acids as dietary supplements are offered by various manufacturers in different dosage forms. Therefore, the prices of the products vary considerably. If necessary, there are offers with discounts in pharmacies, drugstores or when buying on the Internet, so that price comparison is worthwhile.
The cheapest products are often available for less than three euros, whereby it is usually a small package, for example with 60 capsules. Large packs usually cost up to 20 euros. The most expensive are usually vegan products, since without the use of fish oil the production is more complex and expensive. The prices can lie thereby over thirty euro per packing.
