The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by xerostomia (dry mouth):
Respiratory system (J0-J99)
- Pharyngitis (inflammation of the throat).
Eyes and eye appendages (H00-H59).
- Keratoconjunctivitis (eye dryness with eye burning).
- Xerophthalmia (drying of the cornea and conjunctiva).
Mouth, esophagus (esophagus), stomach, and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).
- Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums).
- Caries – due to the lack of saliva, its protective effect on the tooth hard substances is also lost, so that increased caries occurs.
- Periodontitis – infectious, inflammatory disease of the periodontium (periodontium) with gum recession.
- Constipation (constipation)
- Indigestion (dyspepsia) with heartburn (reflux esophagitis).
Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)
- Insomnia (sleep disorders)
Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).
- Dysgeusia – pathologic alteration of taste.
- Halitosis (bad breath) – occurs very pronounced.
