Effect of the lithium
Therapy with lithium is indicated for two different clinical pictures: acute manias and bipolar-affective disorders (mixed forms of manias and depression). Depending on the clinical picture, the onset of action therefore also differs. In acute manias, it can sometimes take up to two weeks before the manic symptoms improve.
For this reason, an accompanying therapy with benzodiazepines or neuroleptics may be necessary. Lithium is taken prophylactically to treat bipolar-affective disorders. Therapy is usually continued for several months or years.Effect is not expected to be felt for at least 6 to 12 months. For this reason, a combination with other antidepressants or neuroleptics may also be indicated during this period.
