The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be caused by endometriosis:
Cardiovascular system (I00-I99).
- Atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis; hardening of the arteries).
- Myocardial infarction (heart attack): -risk (RR 1.63; 95% CI 1.27-2.11), risk for bypass/angioplasty/stent (RR 1.49; 95% CI 1.19-1.86), risk for combined CHD endpoints (RR 1.62; 95% CI 1.39-1.89) about 50% higher than in women without endometriosis
Neoplasms – Tumor Diseases (C00-D48).
- Increased risk of uterine fibroma (benign connective tissue tumor of the uterus).
- Higher risk of melanoma (black skin cancer; 60% higher relative risk than in women without endometriosis).
- Higher risk of ovarian cancer/ovarian cancer (2.5%), mostly endometrioid (OR 3.05) and clear cell (OR 2.04).
Furthermore, there are currently new study results that consider an increase in risk for ovarian (ovary), kidney and thyroid cancers. However, this needs to be verified in further studies.
Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract-genital organs) (N00-N99).
- Follicle maturation disorders (egg maturation disorders) – in endometriosis of the ovaries (ovaries; so-called chocolate cysts).
- Infertility (infertility) (30-50%).
- Reduction in the ability of the egg to fertilize.
- Recurrence (recurrence) of endometriosis of 50-80% even after surgical and endocrine therapy.
- Tubal infertility – the cause of infertility is the fallopian tube.
