Euthyrox in pregnancy and lactation
The drug Euthyrox® may also be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. There are no known risks to the unborn child or infant if Euthyrox® is used in moderate doses. Due to hormonal factors, the need for levothyroxine may increase in women during pregnancy if they suffer from hypothyroidism.
For this reason, the function of the thyroid gland should be monitored particularly thoroughly during and after pregnancy and the dosage adjusted if necessary. If the pregnant woman has an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), the combination therapy with levothyroxine and the so-called thyrostatics (which inhibit the activity of the thyroid gland) must not be used under any circumstances. The supression test with levothyroxine must also not be carried out during pregnancy due to radioactive substances.
Euthyrox and alcohol – is it compatible?
Euthyrox® contains the active ingredient levothyroxine. Levothyroxine is a synthetically produced thyroid hormone. Normally, thyroid hormones are produced in the thyroid gland, the thyroid cells.
Since Euthyrox® performs exactly the same tasks in the body as the body’s own hormones, these also occupy the same receptors and are also broken down by the liver and excreted with the bile. Euthyrox® replaces the tasks of the thyroid hormones. As it is a substance that occurs naturally in the body, it does not cause any incompatibility with alcohol. It is only important to note that Euthyrox® should be swallowed before eating in the morning to ensure optimal absorption in the intestine.
