Eye Redness with Pain: Medical History

Medical history (history of the patient) represents an important component in the diagnosis of “acute eye redness with pain“.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your relatives?
  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common?
  • Are there any hereditary diseases in your family?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Are you exposed to harmful working substances in your profession?

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long has the eye redness been present?
  • Does the redness affect both eyes?
  • Is the redness accompanied by/beginning with or without pain?
  • If pain is present:
    • How long has the pain existed?
    • Has the pain changed in intensity?
    • Has the pain become more severe?
  • Where exactly is the pain localized? Does the pain radiate?
  • Does the pain tend to occur when the eye is at rest or when the eye moves?
  • Does the pain affect both eyes?
  • Is the pain more stabbing, burning or dull?
  • Have you noticed any tearing from the eyes?
  • Have you noticed any visual disturbances?
  • Do you remember a trigger (e.g., something hit your eye)?
  • Do you wear glasses or contact lenses?
