Obligatory medical device diagnostics.
- Electroneurography (ENG)* – to measure nerve conduction velocity of motor and sensory pathways of peripheral nerves.
- Electromyography (EMG; measurement of electrical muscle activity)* .
* In addition to the assessment of nerve function also suitable for the prognosis of facial reanimation. If the clinic is typical, this diagnostic is dispensable!
Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics and obligatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification.
- Audiometry (hearing test) – to check the function of the musculus stapedius due tohyperacusis (increased hearing in terms of pathological fine hearing).
- Further diagnostics in peripheral facial nerve palsy without complete spontaneous regression (regression of the disease); in atypical clinic with accessory symptoms (e.g., hypacusis, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), sensory deficits, double vision) to exclude cerebellopontine angle or petrous bone process, a parotid lesion (injury to the parotid gland), or a brainstem lesion
- Computed tomography (CT) of the skull (cranial CT or.cCT) – standard for visualization of petrous bone and middle ear anatomy.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the skull (cranial MRI or cMRI) – for imaging soft tissue and thus the facial nerve in its course.
- Angiography (imaging of blood vessels by contrast medium in an X-ray examination) or angio-CT – for imaging blood vessels.
