Fever despite antibiotics
If one suffers from fever despite taking an antibiotic, there are several possible causes. Basically, antibiotics only work against bacteria. For example, if a wound infection is present after an operation, antibiotics can only be effective if bacteria are actually responsible for it.
In most cases, it is bacteria that infect wounds, but nevertheless, pathogens such as viruses or parasites rarely occur. If there is a bacterial infection after the operation, for example a wound infection, and the antibiotic does not work, it may be a wrong antibiotic. Not all bacteria respond to the same antibiotics.
Therefore, there are different antibiotics that work against different bacteria. In addition, bacteria can become resistant to certain antibiotics if they are taken frequently. In order to choose the right antibiotic in case of fever, one should have an antibiogram before the therapy. This is a laboratory test to determine the sensitivity of bacteria to antibiotics.
