Flumetasone pivalate is commercially available as a cream and ointment (locacortene, locasalen + salicylic acid). It has been approved in many countries since 1964.
Structure and properties
Flumetasone pivalate (C27H36F2O6, Mr = 494.6 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. The steroid is twice fluorinated.
Effects
Flumetasone pivalate (ATC D07AB03, ATC D07XB01) has antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, and immunosuppressive properties. The active ingredient belongs to strength class II.
Indications
For the treatment of non-infectious, inflammatory skin conditions. The fixed combination with salicylic acid is used for hyperkeratosis.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. The drugs are applied thinly once or twice daily.

Interactions
Interactions with other drugs are not known.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include local skin reactions such as burning, itching, skin dryness, and rash. With prolonged use, as with all glucocorticoids, skin damage such as striae and atrophies are possible. Systemic side effects cannot be ruled out with large-area and occult use.
