Forehead wrinkles

Forehead wrinkles are another form of wrinkles besides eye wrinkles. Eye wrinkles are much more common than forehead wrinkles. The latter can occur in two different forms.

Horizontal forehead wrinkles are wrinkles that run from one side of the forehead to the other. In contrast, vertical wrinkles occur particularly strongly between the eyes. They are often also called wrinkles or wrinkle lines.

Origin

Wrinkles on the forehead arise, among other things, as part of the natural aging process. With increasing age, the wrinkles become more pronounced, the skin becomes thinner and loses elastin (elastic fibers), making the skin less elastic. The body also produces fewer new skin cells.

As a result, the build-up and regeneration of the skin is reduced. The skin increasingly loses elastin and collagen (structural protein). These substances normally keep the skin firm and elastic.

If they are no longer present in the skin, wrinkles appear more frequently. Furthermore, forehead wrinkles are caused especially by facial expressions. Frequent frowning and squinting of the eyes strains the skin and can also lead to early wrinkles on the forehead.

Thus, fine lines are formed in the skin even when laughing. Recurring muscle movements such as frowning, laughing or everyday facial expressions promote the development of wrinkles. These types of wrinkles are also called expression lines.

It also includes the frequent raising of the eyebrows. Especially the horizontal forehead wrinkles are caused by this. The forehead wrinkles show themselves in different intensity from person to person, since the extent of movement of the facial muscles is also individual. This process can hardly be stopped because the muscles of the face are the most used muscles of our body.

Causes

In addition to natural aging and expression lines, there are other causes that can promote the development of forehead wrinkles. The UV rays in sunlight are another factor. It is again divided into UVA and UVB rays.

UVA rays reach into deeper skin layers, such as the dermis. There it can cause considerable damage, which among other things leads to the cells producing less firming collagen and elastin. The tissue becomes flabbier and increasingly collapses.

The UVB rays mainly have a negative effect on the superficial skin layers. They damage the epidermis (outermost skin layer) and are largely the trigger for the development of skin cancer. Therefore, proper and sufficient protection in the form of sunscreen and covering the skin is extremely important.

The skin must be protected in order to remain healthy for a long time. This can also delay the appearance of wrinkles. Smoking also has a destructive effect on the skin.

Smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict. However, the vessels are important for supplying the skin with fluid and nutrients. If the supply of important substances for maintaining healthy skin is reduced by vasoconstriction, wrinkles increasingly appear, so that the skin becomes flabbier.

At the same time, the production of the substances elastin and collagen (proteins for the structure of various tissues) is reduced. They are important for the elasticity of the skin. This also causes forehead wrinkles.

Stress also has a negative influence on the skin. Under stress, the body produces more cortisol, a stress hormone. Cortisol in turn promotes the aging of the skin. The forehead wrinkles appear earlier.
