Preparations from green-lipped mussel are commercially available in many countries in the form of capsules for ingestion and as a gel for external application. Combination preparations with, for example, omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and vitamins are also available.
Ingredients
The New Zealand green-lipped mussel looks similar to the blue mussel and, like the latter, is also used as food. It is primarily farmed in aquacultures off New Zealand and is harvested by the ton each year. Extracts, powders and concentrates from the mussel contain glycosaminoglycans, lipids, omega-3 fatty acids, carbohydrates (glycogen complex), minerals, vitamins and amino acids, among others.
Effects
The preparations are said to have restorative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, joint-lubricating and cartilage-protecting properties. They supply the body with substances that are important for the formation and function of connective tissue, ligaments and cartilage.

As a dietary supplement in osteoarthritis and joint diseases. Other uses are described in the literature.
Dosage
According to the package insert. Medicines should be taken over a long period of time.
Contraindications
The medicines are contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to shellfish and fish. Full precautions can be found in the leaflet.
Adverse effects
The preparations are reported to be well tolerated. Possible adverse effects include digestive discomfort.
