Groundhog Ointments

Products

Marmot ointments are available in pharmacies and drugstores. Some pharmacies in the Alps make marmot ointments themselves as a house specialty. Other products (selection): Alpine Herbs marmot oil ointment, Puralpina, Exmonte and Marmol. The pure marmot fat can be obtained from the specialized trade at Hänseler.

Ingredients

Marmot ointments contain marmot fat (Adeps marmottae), which is obtained, among other things, from the alpine marmot, which is killed during hunting in autumn. It is also called marmot oil. Studies have shown that marmot oil contains various steroid hormones such as glucocorticoids (e.g., cortisone and hydrocortisone) and the progestin progesterone (Wagner, Nusser, 1988). According to the authors of the study, the corticoid concentration in the oil is in the range of cortisone ointments, which are commercially available as pharmaceuticals. In addition, various other ingredients are added to the ointments, such as other fats, plant extracts, and essential oils. It is important for the product quality that the marmot oil is present in a sufficient concentration.

Effects

Marmot ointments are believed to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Glucocorticoids are additionally anti-allergic and immunosuppressive.
