Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (hepatocellular carcinoma/liver cancer).

Family history

  • Is there a history of frequent tumors in your family?

Social anamnesis

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms have you noticed?
  • Do you have abdominal pain?
  • Have you noticed an increase in abdominal circumference?
  • Have you lost any weight?
  • Do you have nausea?
  • Have your skin and/or eyes turned yellow?
  • How long have these changes existed?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Are you overweight? Please tell us your body weight (in kg) and height (in cm).
  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
  • Do you eat a lot of cured and/or smoked foods?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If so, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?
  • Do you drink combined soft drinks (containing sugar and sweeteners)? If yes, how many glasses per week?

  • Pre-existing conditions (liver disease, tumor disease).

  • Environmental history (nitrosamines, aflotoxin B, other mycotoxins, arsenic, chromium (VI) compounds).
  • Drug history (aristolochic acids in Chinese medicinal herbs).
