Heparin–Calcium is commercially available as an injectable (Calciparine). It has been approved in many countries since 1973.
Structure and properties
Heparin calcium is the calcium salt of a sulfated glycosaminoglycan found in mammalian tissues. It is derived from the intestinal mucosa of pigs. Heparin calcium exists as a white powder that is readily soluble in water.
Effects
Heparin calcium (ATC B01AB01) has antithrombotic, anticoagulant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Heparin binds to antithrombin III, and the resulting complex inactivates various clotting factors (including thrombin), inhibiting blood clotting. Protamine can be used as an antidote.
Indications
For prevention and treatment of thromboembolic processes and thrombogenic conditions.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. The drug is injected subcutaneously.
Contraindications
For complete precautions, see the drug label.
