Home care by relatives
Relatives perform the largest part of the nursing work in Germany. Since 01. 07.
2008, relatives providing care can take advantage of a so-called care period to look after family members in need of care. This is possible: If the home care is completely taken over by relatives, the nursing care insurance pays monthly: The amounts are higher if (additionally) an outpatient nursing service is involved in the home care, but are then paid out as benefits in kind. Relatives providing care are also well covered: Whoever cares for relatives for more than 14 hours per week, or who, due to the care, is able to work less than 30 hours per week, is automatically covered by pension and accident insurance.
In addition, the nursing care insurance fund pays support for inpatient short-term care, which can be claimed, for example, in the event of vacation or illness of the relatives providing care. If the nursing care period is already 6 months or more, the nursing care insurance fund also pays once into the so-called “prevention care” in order to pay for an inpatient nursing stay during the vacation of the nursing relatives. Short-term care allowance due to illness and prevention care allowance can also be applied for both in the same year.
