The most important thing you can do against diarrhea at home is to drink a lot to compensate for the loss of fluid caused by the diarrhea. Especially water, herbal teas and black teas are well suited for this. It should be ensured that the water does not contain carbonic acid, since this additionally irritates the intestine.

Milk should be avoided. Since, in addition to water, many important electrolytes are washed out of the body, these should also be replaced. As an alternative to an electrolyte solution from the pharmacy you can also mix one teaspoon of salt, 8 teaspoons of dextrose and 0.5 liters of orange juice in 1 liter of water.

The pectin it contains forms a protective layer on the intestinal wall so that the bacterial toxins cannot attack it. Pureed bananas are also recommended for diarrhoea. Carrot soup is also suitable for fighting diarrhoea.

Food is best eaten lukewarm and lightly salted in case of diarrhoea. Several very small portions should be eaten. Rice, cooked in salted water, helps the body to absorb the minerals that are supplied.

Another household remedy is yeast. This binds the diarrhoea pathogens and helps to remove them. The generally recommended household remedy of cola and salt sticks is not as good as many think.

Although the salt sticks provide the body with some of the salts it needs, they do not provide potassium. The high sugar content of cola means that even more water gets into the intestines and is excreted. The caffeine contained in cola leads to this laxative effect and is more harmful than beneficial.

Healing earth is also an alternative to treat diarrhea. One to two teaspoons of it should be put into a glass of water and drunk in small sips. In addition, dried blueberries and sage, which are left to steep in boiling water for 10 minutes, are considered household remedies for diarrhea, as they also have mucous membrane protective effects.
