Household remedy against child vomiting

Even in children who suffer from vomiting, the most important thing is to drink enough fluids. This is not always easy, as the nausea associated with vomiting often takes away the children’s desire to drink. Nevertheless, it should always be tried to compensate for the fluid deficit.

If the vomiting is severe and persistent and the child cannot be induced to drink, there is a risk of dehydration. In this case the family doctor or pediatrician should be consulted. If necessary, he or she can administer an infusion through the vein. Gentle teas such as chamomile or peppermint can help to relieve the nausea. Ginger tea, which is often recommended for adults to help against vomiting, tastes much too spicy for children in most cases.

Home remedy against vomiting during pregnancy

Vomiting during pregnancy can “quite simply” be caused by a viral infection, in which case the classic household remedies (see above) will help. However, pregnant women should limit the consumption of ginger tea to a maximum of three cups a day, as larger quantities of ginger are suspected of triggering premature labor. However, if vomiting is triggered by the pregnancy itself, which is possible especially at the beginning of a pregnancy, patients should eat a small and light breakfast and also otherwise prefer small and light but more frequent meals.

This prevents the excessive production of gastric acid and prevents morning sickness. In an attack of nausea it can help to smell a cut lemon or drink still mineral water with lemon. It is also helpful to learn an acupressure technique against morning sickness, which can be performed by the pregnant woman herself or by her partner. (see above)

Cola – an effective remedy for vomiting?

Cola is considered a proven household remedy for vomiting and diarrhea. However, the assumption that it prevents or relieves diarrhea or vomiting is wrong. Rather, cola is still recommended from time to time because a lot of fluid and body salts such as sodium and potassium are lost during vomiting and diarrhoea.

Therefore the combination of cola and salt sticks is often advertised. Cola to make up for the fluid deficit and salt sticks because of the lack of salt. However, it does not have the penetrating effect that is said about this myth.

Especially the many sugars in normal cola and the contained caffeine can lead to even more water loss and the salt of the salt sticks does not compensate the lack of the different body salts. It is therefore better to drink sufficient amounts of, for example, herbal teas that are easy on the stomach and warm broth with salt.In the case of severe fluid loss, both in adults and children, a doctor should be consulted. The doctor can compensate for the loss by administering infusion solutions whose composition has been specially developed for this purpose.
