How do I recognize a chronic course?

One speaks of a chronic cold if the symptoms persist for more than 12 weeks. Behind this, there can be various basic problems, which often cannot be influenced. Often bacterial pathogens are involved, which infiltrate certain mucous membranes and cannot be fought sufficiently by the immune system.

A very typical example is chronic sinusitis. The secretion can only flow out of the sinuses with difficulty, so that even with correct treatment, infection with the same pathogens occurs again and again, as these are fixed there. Anatomical peculiarities such as enlarged nasal conchae, a crooked nasal septum or polyps are also reasons for protracted and recurring colds.

If the ventilation of the nose is permanently guaranteed, personal immune deficiencies or special resistant pathogens can also be behind it. A clarification by an ENT specialist can reveal the various causes and should be carried out after about 2-3 weeks to prevent chronic progressions.
