How long does a coloboma on the eye last?
The duration of a coloboma in the eye is usually expected to be life-long in congenital colobomas. In addition, no therapy is sought for non-restrictive colobomas. If vision is reduced by the coloboma, it can be treated with surgery, but residues of the congenital coloboma usually remain.
Acquired colobomas on the eye, on the other hand, can heal on their own in the case of very small injuries. Areas that are particularly well supplied with blood, such as the eyelid, grow together well. Other structures in the eye, on the other hand, must be treated surgically.
Depending on how fast the healing process progresses, restrictions of a few weeks can be expected. If there are scars on the optical axis (i.e. the area through which light enters the eye), there may also be permanent limitations to the vision of the affected eye.
