Humidifying nasal sprays are commercially available from a variety of suppliers (e.g., Fluimare, Nasmer, Triomer, Emser Nasal Spray).
Ingredients
The solutions in the sprays usually contain one of the following salts:
- Sodium chloride (table salt)
- Sea salt with various minerals and trace elements.
- Emser salt with various minerals and trace elements
In addition, active ingredients and excipients such as dexpanthenol or hyaluronic acid may be included. The solutions are usually sterile and isotonic, but can also be hypertonic. In most cases, a preservative is omitted.
Effects
Saline solutions have moisturizing, nourishing, cleansing, and mild decongestant properties. They loosen mucus and promote wound healing.
Indications for use
- Dry and stuffy nose, crusting.
- For mild nasal cleansing
- Acute and chronic rhinitis
- Hay fever, allergic rhinitis
- Inflamed or irritated nasal mucosa of various causes (rhinitis).
- Sinusitis
Dosage
According to the package leaflet. As a rule, 1 to 2 sprays are given into both nostrils several times a day. There is no limit to the duration of use. See also under Administering nasal sprays.
Contraindications
The sprays are contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. See the Instructions for Use for complete precautions.
Interactions
Other nasal sprays should not be administered concomitantly.
Adverse effects
Saline solutions are usually well tolerated and cause few side effects. Unlike decongestant nasal sprays, they can be used regularly and for long periods of time.
