Structure and properties

Hydrocortisone acetate (C23H32O6, Mr = 404.5 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. It is an acetylated hydrocortisone (cortisol).

Effects

Hydrocortisone acetate (ATC S01BA02) has anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, immunosuppressive, and antipruritic properties. The effects are based on binding to intracellular receptors.

Indications

For the treatment of allergic, noninfectious, and inflammatory diseases of the conjunctiva and eyelids.

Dosage

According to the professional information. The ointment is applied to the conjunctival sac of the eye two to three times daily. See also under Administering ophthalmic ointments. The duration of treatment should not usually exceed two weeks.

Contraindications

Hydrocortisone acetate is contraindicated in the eye in cases of hypersensitivity, infectious diseases, injuries and ulcerative processes of the cornea, and glaucoma. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Drug-drug interactions have been described with mydriatics and antiglaucomatous agents.

Adverse effects

The most common potential adverse effects include red eyes due to increased conjunctival blood flow, increased lacrimation, and increased intraocular pressure. Glucocorticoids may promote the development of infectious diseases and cause cataracts.
