Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of cystitis (bladder infection). The sensitivity (percentage of diseased patients in whom the disease is detected by the use of history, i.e., a positive result occurs) by a typical history ranges from 50 to 80 percent!

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).
- Do you suffer from increased urination, including at night?
- Do you have pain when urinating?
- Do you have “burning sensation when urinating”?
- Do you empty only a little urine, although you feel you have a bulging bladder?
- Do you have difficulty holding urine?
- Do you have pain in the lower abdomen?
- Do you have flank pain (side abdominal region)?
- Have you noticed blood in your urine?
- Is the urine concentrated or flocculent?
- Did you or do you have a fever/chills* ?
- Do you suffer from stress or constant tension?
- Have you recently worn an indwelling catheter?
Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.
- Were you exposed to drafts with damp clothing such as in the swimming pool?
- Do you practice regular but not excessive intimate hygiene?
- Do you drink enough?
- Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
- Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
- Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?
Self history incl. medication history.
- Pre-existing conditions (diabetes mellitus (diabetes), urinary tract diseases).
- Sexual history
- Sexual habits (heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality)?
- Frequency and number of sexual contacts?
- Do you engage in anal intercourse/anal sex? If yes, receptive or insertive or passive or active?
- Do you empty your urinary bladder after sexual intercourse?
- Do you use contraceptives? If yes, which ones (e.g., condoms?, vaginal diaphragm?, hormonal contraceptives?).

- Allergies
Medication history
- Antibiotic therapy, 2 to 4 weeks ago.
- Immunosuppressed patient(s).
- Contraception with DMPA (depot medroxyprogesterone acetate).
- Cytostatic drugs (e.g., methotrexate).
