Inflammation of the ISGSacroiliitis

An inflammation of the sacroiliac joint is known in medical terminology as sacroiliitis. Inflammation in the sacroiliac joint (sacroiliitis) can lead to destruction of the joint with severe pain and the possible consequence of irreversible postural damage. In the last stage of the disease, there is a complete bony stiffening of the joint (so-called ankylosis).

Inflammation of the ISG can be detected by various imaging techniques. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the method that detects changes at a very early stage. More advanced stages can also be detected in classic x-rays and computer tomography (CT) examinations.

Inflammation of the sacroiliac joint (sacroiliitis) is usually not found as a single disease, but as a symptom of an underlying disease. Typical underlying diseases associated with sacroiliitis are Bechterew’s disease is a disease from the rheumatic form. More men are concerned.

Apart from an inflammation in the sacroiliac joint (sacroiliitis), changes in the spinal column with increasing stiffening frequently occur. In addition, inflammation of various joints and the insertion tendons of muscles are typical (for example, the Achilles tendon). Behcet’s disease is particularly common in the Mediterranean region and, in addition to inflammation of the ISG (sacroiliitis), often has aphtae in the mouth and genital area, various skin rashes, inflammation in joints and eye diseases as symtoms.

Reiter’s syndrome refers to the simultaneous occurrence of conjunctivitis, joint inflammation and inflammation of the urinary tract. Psoriatic arthritis is a special form of psoriasis that is associated with joint inflammation.

In general, the treatment of the underlying disease is the main therapeutic focus. Cortisone or other immunosuppressive drugs (such as methotrexate (MTX)) are often used.
