Inflammation of the maxillary sinus as the cause of pain in the upper jaw
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane in the region of the sinuses caused by bacteria and viruses, which can lead to the occurrence of pain in the upper jaw. In medicine, a distinction is made between an acute and a chronic form of this inflammatory disease. An acutely occurring sinusitis often develops in the course of a rhinitis.
The penetration of the pathogens can lead to swelling of the mucous membranes within the paranasal sinuses; these swellings constrict the natural drainage channels and thus trigger inflammatory processes. An acute sinusitis usually goes along with this: In most cases, the entry point of the pathogens is the nasal mucosa, and the acute forms are transmitted by a droplet infection. The chronic type of sinusitis is a disease that lasts longer than two to three months.
In most cases, chronic sinusitis results directly from an acute disease. This can happen when an acute inflammation does not heal or heals insufficiently. Other causes of maxillary sinusitis: Symptoms of a chronic form of this infectious disease include a long-lasting loss of smell (anosmia), strong, thin nasal discharge (rhinorrhea), secretion in the throat, strong sensations of pressure in the area of the head (especially the paranasal sinuses and the orbit), upper jaw pain and headaches.

Duration of upper jaw pain
The duration of jaw pain can vary greatly depending on the cause. If the pain is caused by teeth grinding and tension, it can often be relieved after a few weeks by wearing a night brace. If an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses is the cause of the pain in the upper jaw, this pain can subside after about 1-2 weeks by means of antibiotics. However, if the cause of the upper jaw pain is an inflammation of the tooth root or the bone, the disappearance of the pain can take several weeks to months.
