Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics, and obligatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification.
- X-ray of the chest (X-ray thorax/chest), in two planes – to exclude pneumonia (lung inflammation) [evidence of pulmonary infiltrate].
- X-ray images or computed tomography (CT; sectional imaging method (X-ray images from different directions with computer-based evaluation)) of the paranasal sinuses – to exclude sinusitis (sinusitis).
- Computed tomography of the skull (cranial CT, cranial CT or cCT) – if meningitis/encephalitis (inflammation of the meninges/brain) is suspected.
- Electrocardiogram (ECG; recording of the electrical activity of the heart muscle) – if myocarditis/pericarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle/pericardium) is suspected.
- Echocardiography (echo; heart ultrasound) – if myocarditis / pericarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle / pericarditis) is suspected.
- Tympanometry (middle ear pressure measurement) – if otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear) is suspected.
