If the hip pain radiates into the thigh during or after jogging, this usually indicates irritation of the “tractus iliotibialis“. This is a connective tissue structure that originates close to the hip joint at the pelvic bone and extends along the entire outer thigh to the base of the shin bone. The pain is classically localized not only in the thigh but also on the outside of the knee, where the tendon plate rubs against the bone.

Pain in the outer knee due to irritation of the iliotibial tract defines the so-called “runner’s knee“. The tractus iliotibialis fulfils the function of counteracting bending forces on the thigh. The tractus iliotibialis must also fulfill this task, especially when jogging.

Incorrect and/or overloading can lead to irritation and, in addition to hip pain, can also cause pain down to the thigh. Joggers with bow legs, an existing leg length difference or overweight represent a risk group for the occurrence of such symptoms.
