Interferon gamma is commercially available as a solution for injection (Imukin). It has been approved in many countries since 1997.
Structure and properties
Interferon gamma-1b is a protein consisting of 140 amino acids. It is obtained from a -strain by biotechnological methods.
Effects
Interferon gamma (ATC L03AB03) has antiviral, antiproliferative, antitumor, and immunostimulatory properties.
Indications
To reduce the incidence of severe infections in chronic granulomatosis.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. The drug is injected subcutaneously three times a week in the evening.
Contraindications
Interferon gamma-1b is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Interactions
Drug-drug interactions have been described with hepatic, renal, neurotoxic, hematotoxic, and cardiotoxic agents, myelosuppressive agents, serum proteins, immunologic preparations such as vaccines, and CYP substrates.
Adverse effects
The most common possible adverse effects include flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue.
