Is it dangerous to become pregnant with an untreated umbilical hernia?
An umbilical hernia in pregnancy often regresses on its own. In addition, an umbilical hernia can also occur independently of a pregnancy. If the hernia does not regress, it is decided individually how to proceed: As mentioned above, the treatment of an umbilical hernia before pregnancy requires expert clarification and is decided individually.
For this reason, you should always consult a gynecologist who will treat your individual case and, after a comprehensive examination, will be able to assess which solution is the more favorable.
- In certain cases, specialists recommend not to treat the umbilical hernia until family planning is complete, as it will most likely return anyway at the next pregnancy. The unborn child itself is not endangered by the umbilical hernia – the abdominal wall is loosened and the child cannot get trapped.
- Other specialists advise to wait for some time after delivery and, if the umbilical hernia does not regress, to intervene surgically. This should then be done, according to previous recommendations, some time after delivery, but before the next pregnancy.
