Licorice: Dosage

Licorice root can be taken in the form of tea or other infusions. The drug is available in filter bags or also as a component of tea mixtures of the group bronchial and gastrointestinal teas. However, licorice is often only declared as a sweetener. In the field of herbal medicines, licorice root is available in the form of pastilles and cough syrups. The average daily dose, unless otherwise prescribed, is 5-15 g of the drug or 200-800 mg of glycyrrhizin.

Licorice preparation

Preparations containing licorice root should not be taken in cirrhosis of the liver, liver disease caused by biliary congestion, hypertension, hypokalemia, renal failure, pregnancy and lactation. Licorice should not be taken for more than 4-6 weeks at a time without medical advice. However, as a flavor corrigendum, the plant can be used without problems up to a maximum daily dose of 100 mg glycyrrhizin. In licorice, the maximum allowable level of glycyrrhizin is 200 mg/100 g, and no more than 50 g should be consumed per day. Licorice root should be stored in a dry place away from light.
