Vasculitides: Consequential Diseases

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by vasculitides:

Consequential diseases in general

  • Vasculitis can lead to stenosis (narrowing) and obliteration (occlusion) of a vessel, as well as to aneurysm (bulging of a vessel)

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), formerly Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS)

Diseases

Respiratory System (J00-J99)

  • Pulmonary syndrome – combination of renal and pulmonary vasculitis (inflammation of the (mostly) arterial blood vessels in the kidneys and lungs) including necrotizing extracapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the glomeruli (renal corpuscles) of the kidneys)

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99).

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)

  • Paralysis, unspecified

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), formerly Wegener’s granulomatosis

Eyes and eye appendages (H00-H59).

  • Episcleritis – inflammation of connective tissue layers on the sclera (3.5%).
  • Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) – inflammation of the conjunctiva associated with decreased tear secretion and keratitis (4-15%).
  • Pseudotumor orbitae – nonspecific inflammatory infiltration of the orbit (bony orbit), which usually occurs unilaterally.
  • Scleritis – inflammation of the sclera (16-38%).

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Pulmonary hemorrhage

Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – reproductive organs) (N00-N99)

  • Acute renal failure (ANV)

Further

  • Acute organ failure, unspecified

Kawasaki syndrome (MCLS)

Diseases

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)-likely based on aneurysms of the coronaries (vascular outpouchings of the coronary arteries) as a late consequence of the disease

Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA)

Respiratory System (J00-J99)

  • Pulmonary syndrome – combination of renal and pulmonary vasculitis (inflammation of the (mostly) arterial blood vessels in the kidneys and lungs) including necrotizing extracapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the glomeruli (renal corpuscles) of the kidneys)

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Capillaritis of the lung with alveolar hemorrhage syndrome (hemorrhage).

Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – reproductive organs) (N00-N99).

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN; panarteritis nodosa)

Diseases

Cardiovascular System (I00-I99).

  • Ischemias, especially in the heart, CNS, kidney, liver, and gastrointestinal tract.

Schönlein-Henoch purpura

Diseases

  • Mouth, esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

    • Ileus (intestinal obstruction)
    • Ischemia (reduced blood flow) in a section of the intestine.
    • Perforation (rupture) of the intestine
    • Ulcus ventriculi (stomach ulcer)

Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – reproductive organs) (N00-N99)

    • Acute renal failure
    • Chronic renal insufficiency (kidney weakness)
    • Mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the glomeruli/renal corpuscles) with mesangial IgA deposits.
