Listeriosis: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by listeriosis:

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F9); G00-G99)

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99).

Pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium (O00-O99).

  • Premature birth
  • Infection of the embryo during pregnancy/birth (granulomatosis infantiseptica) – two-thirds of surviving infants develop neonatal listeriosis, which is associated with an overall perinatal mortality (death rate) of approximately 30%
  • Spontaneous abortion*
  • Stillbirth*

* Affects one in five pregnancies complicated by listeriosis.
