Lozaar® is the trade name of the drug containing the active ingredient losartan potassium.
Fields of application
Lozaar® belongs to the drug group of angiotensin II receptor antagonists and can lower blood pressure by blocking the binding of angiotensin to the receptor. In addition, Lozaar® can help maintain kidney function for longer periods of time in patients with high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus type 2 (diabetes). For this reason, the indications for the use of Lozaar®:
- Treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) in children (6 years and older), adolescents and adults
- Kidney protection in patients with high blood pressure and diabetes
- Treatment of cardiac insufficiency (cardiac insufficiency), in case of failure of ACE inhibitors
- Reducing the risk of a stroke.
Contraindications
Not taking Lorzaar® Diabetes mellitus, limited kidney function, and the simultaneous intake of aliskiren also speaks against taking Lorzaar®.
- If you are allergic to losartan or any other component of the drug
- For lactose intolerance, as Lorzaar® contains lactose
- In case of a significant restriction of liver function
- During pregnancy, especially after the 3rd month
- In the nursing period. Otherwise the child may be seriously injured
Restrictions on use
If the following situations arise, it is essential to consult a doctor before taking Lorzaar®:
- Angioedema in the past
- Severe vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Diuretic ingestion
- Low salt or low potassium diet
- Narrowing or blocking of the renal blood vessels (renal artery stenosis)
- Renal transplantation recently
- Renal dysfunction
- Liver dysfunction
- Heart failure (cardiac insufficiency)
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Treatment with beta-blockers (blood pressure reducers)
- Disease of the heart valves or the heart muscle
- Disease of the coronary arteries
- Disease of the blood vessels of the brain
- Increased release of the hormone aldosterone (primary hyperaldosteronism)
- Taking Aliskiren to lower blood pressure
