Lovage: Effect and Side Effects

Lovage is said to have antispasmodic, antiflatulent, and diuretic effects, but there are currently no sound scientific studies to support this. The antispasmodic effect can probably be attributed to ligustilide. In general, phthalides probably stimulate the secretion of saliva and digestive juices, leading to the stimulation of digestion.

Lovage: possible side effects

Furocoumarins may have phototoxic and carcinogenic effects. However, due to the low water solubility of these substances, such effects are not expected with therapeutic use, so the drug can be considered safe. However, when using lovage root for a long period of time, intensive sunbathing and UV irradiation should be avoided.

Currently, there are no known interactions with other agents.
