Magnesium Deficiency (Hypomagnesemia): Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate hypomagnesemia (magnesium deficiency):

  • Neuromuscular (nerve-muscle-related) symptoms.
  • Cardiovascular (cardiovascular-related) symptoms:
    • ECG changes
      • Decrease in ST segment
      • Flattening of the T-wave
      • Possible QT prolongation
    • Cardiac arrhythmias (e.g., arrhythmias* , extrasystoles/extra heartbeats; tachycardia (heartbeat too fast: > 100 beats per minute).
  • Gastrointestinal (gastrointestinal-related) symptoms.
  • Nervous system and psyche
    • Apathy* (apathy).
    • Ataxia* (disturbance of the coordination of movement).
    • Inner restlessness
    • Lethargy
    • Paresthesias* (“ant tingling”).
    • Rapid fatigability
    • Irritability*
    • Feeling of weakness*
    • Dizziness*
    • Tremor (shaking)*

* Clinical signs that usually appear only when the magnesium plasma concentration is < 0, 5 mmol/l.

Note: Some of the above symptoms may also indicate hypocalcemia (calcium deficiency).
