Mammary Gland Pain (Mastodynia): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of mastodynia (breast pain).

Family history

Social history

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Do you have chest pain?
  • Where exactly is the pain localized? On both sides?
  • Has the pain changed? Become stronger?* *
  • Did the pain come on suddenly?* *
  • Does the pain radiate?
  • What is the character of the pain? Stabbing, dull, burning, tearing, etc.?
  • Is the pain dependent on breathing?* * .
  • Do you have shortness of breath?* *
  • Does the pain intensify with exertion/movement or does it get better then?
  • When does the pain occur? Are you dependent on external factors such as diet, stress, weather?
  • When does the pain occur in relation to the cycle (before, during and independently of menstruation)?
  • Have you noticed a feeling of tightness in the breast? Is the feeling of tightness cyclical or independent of the cycle?
  • Have you noticed lumps in the breast?*
  • Have you noticed any secretion of fluid from the nipple?
  • Are there any other symptoms (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, difficulty swallowing, heartburn, etc.) in addition to chest pain?
  • Do you have accompanying symptoms such as fever or feeling sick?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.
