Meniere’s Disease: Medical History

Medical history (history of the patient) is an important component in the diagnosis of Meniere’s disease.

Family history

  • Is there a frequent history of ear disease in your family?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • When did the vertigo (spinning/swinging vertigo) occur?
  • How long did it last?
  • Did nausea occur along with the dizziness?
  • Did additional symptoms such as ringing in the ears or ear pressure and/or hearing loss occur?
  • Are both ears affected?
  • Have you noticed any involuntary rhythmic eye movement (eye tremor)?
  • Have such seizures occurred more than once?
  • Were there any triggers for your symptoms?
  • Have there been any accompanying symptoms:
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Urinary and fecal urgency
    • Sweating
    • Palpitations
    • Anxiety

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you smoke? If yes, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (ear diseases)
  • Operations
  • Allergies
  • Medication history
