Myelodysplastic Syndrome: Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS):

Symptoms due to cytopenia (decrease in the number of cells in the blood) (80%).

  • Anemia symptoms (70-80%).
    • Exertional dyspnea (shortness of breath during exertion).
    • Exercise tachycardia (rapid heartbeat under stress).
    • Paleness of the skin and mucous membranes
    • Headache
    • Tiredness and fatigue
    • Dizziness
    • Decreased physical and mental performance
  • Frequent, prolonged, sometimes severe infections (35%) – due to the lack of leukocytes (white blood cells that play an important role in the immune defense) or due to the dysfunction of neutrophil granulocytes.
    • The bronchial system (respiratory system) and the skin are particularly affected.
    • Even by the administration of antibiotics, the infection is not treatable.
  • Symptoms due to increased bleeding tendency (20%) – due to the lack of platelets (platelets that are significant for blood clotting) or their reduced functionality.
    • Hematomas (bruises/bruises).
    • Nosebleeds
    • Petechiae (smallest punctate bleeding of the skin/mucous membranes).
    • Bleeding gums

Other symptoms

  • Hepatomegaly (enlargement of the liver) (5-25%).
  • Lymphadenopathy (lymph node enlargement) (5-15%).
  • Splenomegaly (spleen enlargement) (10-20%) – especially in patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) (30-50%).
