The following symptoms and complaints may indicate myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS):
Symptoms due to cytopenia (decrease in the number of cells in the blood) (80%).
- Anemia symptoms (70-80%).
- Exertional dyspnea (shortness of breath during exertion).
- Exercise tachycardia (rapid heartbeat under stress).
- Paleness of the skin and mucous membranes
- Headache
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Dizziness
- Decreased physical and mental performance
- Frequent, prolonged, sometimes severe infections (35%) – due to the lack of leukocytes (white blood cells that play an important role in the immune defense) or due to the dysfunction of neutrophil granulocytes.
- The bronchial system (respiratory system) and the skin are particularly affected.
- Even by the administration of antibiotics, the infection is not treatable.
- Symptoms due to increased bleeding tendency (20%) – due to the lack of platelets (platelets that are significant for blood clotting) or their reduced functionality.
