A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:
- General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body temperature, body weight, body height; furthermore:
- Inspection (viewing).
- Skin and mucous membranes
- Palpation (palpation) of the nerve pressure points.
- Knocking pain paranasal sinuses?
- Inspection (viewing).
- ENT medical examination – including anterior and posterior rhinoscopy (reflection of the nasal cavity from the nostril or from the nasopharynx), inspection of the nasopharynx (nasopharynx) [nasal polyp; in sinusitis (sinusitis): mucus-pus road of the posterior pharyngeal wall (postnasal drip); pus in the ostium area (rare but reliable finding)]Consensus decision of the S2k guideline: In clarification of recurrent acute rhinosinusitis (ARS), endoscopy, at least rhinoscopy should be performed (strong consensus, 6/6).
- If necessary, dental or maxillofacial surgical examination if odontogenic sinusitis (tooth-related sinus infection) is suspected.
