Nearsightedness: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by myopia (nearsightedness):

Eyes and eye appendages (H00-H59).

  • Ablatio retinae (retinal detachment).
  • Degenerative eye disease (22-fold increased risk with myopia higher than -10 dpt (0.4% of adults))
  • Glaucoma (glaucoma; occurs more frequently in myopia).
  • Cataract (cataract; disease occurs earlier in myopia).
  • Myopic maculopathy (disease of the macula; macular edema or ischemic damage to the macula / site of sharpest vision on the retinal center) (at minus 6 diopters: 9 times higher risk than with myopia of only minus one diopter).
