Newborn Rash

Symptoms

Neonatal rash manifests as a patchy, urticarial rash with central vesicles, papules, or pustules, often occurring in the first few days to weeks after birth. The face, trunk, extremities, and buttocks are most commonly affected, with the palms of the hands and soles of the feet usually left out. Otherwise, no other symptoms are observed.

Causes

It is an inflammatory skin disease. The exact cause is unknown. High birth weight is considered a risk factor.

Diagnosis

At diagnosis, medical treatment must exclude other skin diseases such as infectious diseases (e.g., impetigo, herpes, chickenpox, folliculitis, fungal infections), melanosis, cutis marmorata, milia, neonatal acne, and miliaria.

Treatment

A neonatal rash is not considered to require treatment. The skin lesions disappear on their own within days.
