There are currently no registered medicines containing niflumic acid in many countries. It is administered in the form of capsules and gel, among others.
Structure and properties
Niflumic acid (C13H9F3N2O2, Mr = 282.2 g/mol) exists as a pale yellow crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. It is an anthranilic acid derivative such as mefenamic acid.
Effects
Niflumic acid (ATC M01AX02) has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. The effects are due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by inhibition of cyclooxygenase. Niflumic acid additionally blocks various ion channels and is therefore also used for scientific research.
Indications
For the treatment of pain and inflammatory diseases, for example arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. Peroral or topical therapy is available.

Adverse effects
The most common possible adverse effects include gastrointestinal discomfort and skin disorders. As with other NSAIDs, serious adverse reactions may rarely occur.
