Nitenpyram is commercially available in tablet form (Capstar). It has been approved in many countries since 1999.
Structure and properties
Nitenpyram (C11H15ClN4O2, Mr = 270.7 g/mol) is a chlorinated pyridine derivative derived from nicotine. It is structurally related to imidacloprid.
Effects
Nitenpyram (ATCvet QP53BX02) has insecticidal properties. The effects are due to binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and occur rapidly, within approximately 30 minutes. The drug is absorbed into the blood and enters the fleas during the blood meal. Nitenpyram has a half-life of 4-8 hours and is excreted within about 2 days. Thus, it does not have a long-lasting effect such as lufenuron, with which it can be combined.
