Nosebleeds desolate

In case of light nosebleeds caused by a bleeding of the vessels of the anterior nasal septum and whose source of bleeding is clear, it is possible that the ENT physician will obliterate them. It is usually not a major intervention. The patient is anaesthetized by spray.

Then an acid is applied to a cotton swab and then a neutralization is performed. It is also possible to perform a sclerotherapy with the help of electricity, a so-called electrocoagulation. Some doctors also offer laser coagulation. In the post-treatment, an ointment for the interior of the nose is recommended. In addition, bending down and physical exertion should be avoided, as there is a risk that the sclerosed vessels will burst open again.

Complications

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • In nosebleeds a large amount of blood runs down the throat and is swallowed. Blood clumps together in the stomach and acts as an emetic. Nausea and vomiting can increase the pressure on the nasal mucosa and the bleeding.

For this reason, the blood should simply be drained outwards.

  • Ingestion (aspiration)If blood is inhaled during a heavy bleeding, aspiration occurs. In weakened patients, blood aspiration can lead to a loss of consciousness. At this point at the latest, the patient must be given emergency treatment.
  • High blood lossIf the nosebleed does not stop, there is a risk of bleeding (volume deficiency shock). This also leads to unconsciousness.

Prophylaxis

How can nosebleeds be avoidedProphylaxis? Avoid all possible damage to the nasal mucosa. Nose blowing should be done gently.

Many people squeeze their nose too tightly when blowing and build up high pressure. However, stubborn bark and crusts can easily be softened with nasal ointments and oils (Bebanthen® Nasal Ointment, Coldastop® Nasal Oil). Regular inhalation with steam and sea salt solutions can prevent blocked noses, moisten the nasal mucous membrane and promote its regeneration.

Also avoid mechanical irritation caused by nasal drilling. The room air should be kept moist. Regular ventilation in strongly heated rooms provides a natural climate and a pleasant humidity. If you use a room humidifier, change the liquid regularly to avoid bacterial contamination of the containers. To give the nasal mucosa the opportunity for self-moisturization, you should ensure that there is an adequate supply of liquid. Basic diseases, first and foremost high blood pressure (hypertension), must be treated by your family doctor.
